The Study Group possess an archive of some 2,500 items relating to the North British Railway’s history. The archive is currently stored within a secure commercial storage area and consists of books, articles, Company documents, drawings, maps, plans, timetables, etc. Each item is allocated a unique archive ID, with details about the item being stored on a searchable database. Members have access to the information stored in our archive through the Group’s Archivist.
Electronic archive
In addition to the physical archive, a small number of Company documents from the main archive, together with most of our collection of mechanical engineering drawings (predominantly locomotives) have now been scanned. These digital files are also held by the Archivist.
Photograph collection
The Group has approximately 10,000 photographs in its collection, covering all aspects of the NBR’s past operations, particularly its stock of locomotives, from its earliest years in the 1840s to the end of the Company’s independent existence in 1923. In addition, there are many photographs covering the LNER and British Railways periods. The Group is currently in process of a major project to digitise these images in order to provide better access for our members, and to ensure a secure back-up. Each image is being allocated a unique reference number, with the details being entered into a searchable database from which it is hoped to produce an up-to-date catalogue as an aid to member’s research.
