NBR Dia.97 / LNER SSA Dia.28B 18 Ton Mineral Wagon – 7mm : 1 foot

Introduction:

The NBRSG are delighted to announce their next model wagon kit, our first 7mm model and 3D printed. If this kit is successfully received, it may be the first of several wagons commissioned from the Scottish Wagon Works, with the earlier 16 Ton Mineral Wagon and later 20 Ton Loco Coal wagon under consideration.

Prototype history:

Intended as an improved version of the 16 Ton wagon, this 18 Ton mineral wagon was developed in 1919 and introduced in 1920. The LNER continued to build these in 1923. The wagons were uprated to 20 tons during the second world war.

Built with wood underframes, the majority were fitted with Spencer Moulton buffers, oil axleboxes, most with the later NBR welded steel box axleboxes. Braking was by independent lever brake, both sides with two shoes acting on opposite wheels. Some of the builds had tie rods between the axle guards but most photographs show this omitted.

The main visual difference compared to the earlier 16 Ton wagon concerned the side planking/end door arrangement. On the 18 Ton wagon, the side sheeting extended beyond the end door while the 16 Ton shut against it. Later repairs saw the two-layer side cupboard doors replaced with a single layer of vertical boards. Additionally, the grab handle located on the right-hand side of the side sheeting was omitted after repairs.

Number of wagons known:

Those which entered BR service lasted into the mid to late 1950s, with the new built BR 16 Ton steel mineral wagon rapidly replacing older wooden bodied wagons as they entered traffic.

A limited edition run of this vehicle has been commissioned by the North British Railway Study Group.

There are two versions of the kit released by the NBRSG, one in as-built NBR condition and the other as later repaired and seen in LNER and BR use. Axleboxes with both NBR and LNE lettering are included, along with waterslide transfers covering their entire working career. Separate 3D-printed wagon number plates, both NBR and LNER, are also included.

These are for now only available from the NBRSG, with production limited to small batches.

Thereafter, they may become part of the Scottish Wagon Works general range.

Wheels and couplings are left to the purchaser to source, to suit their own preferences. Wheels should be 3' 1" open spoke, and bearings will also be required.
